Last June 26, 2020, police arrested at least 20 people during the Pride March in Mendiola, Manila, who were demanding for government aid for workers and drivers displaced by the coronavirus lockdown. Included in the arrest was Mr. John Marc Cho Santos, an alumnus of the Institute of Biology, and nine other members of the LGBTQ+ rights group Bahaghari. According to news reports, the protesters were observing physical distancing and other mitigation measures when the police arrested them. The Institute of Biology believes in the inherent right of every individual, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity expression, to make their voices heard. We call on the Philippine National Police for the immediate and safe release of Pride20. #FreePride20.
